Dental bridges in brief

A bridge is a fixed prosthesis made by reducing and crowning the teeth on either side of the gap and placing an artificial tooth in the space between. This restores both chewing and appearance and stops the neighboring teeth from drifting into the gap.

The alternative to a bridge is an implant. If the neighboring teeth are sound and you would rather not have them reduced, an implant may be more suitable. Which one suits you is assessed together at the examination. At our clinic, bridges are made by Dr. Betül Hamitoğlu and Balamir Türker, DDS.

A bridge takes support from the teeth on either side of the gap. The supporting teeth are reduced and crowned, and the artificial tooth between them is attached to these crowns.

Will my teeth hurt while the bridge is made?

Because the supporting teeth are prepared under local anesthesia, you do not feel pain during the procedure. There may be mild sensitivity for the next few days.

How long does a bridge last?

With good oral care and regular check-ups it can be used for many years. Cleaning under the bridge directly affects its lifespan.

Is a bridge or an implant better?

Both have advantages. If the neighboring teeth are sound, an implant may be preferable; if they have fillings or crowns, a bridge may make more sense. The decision is made at the examination.

Which materials are used?

Mostly zirconia or porcelain fused to metal. The choice depends on the area and your aesthetic expectations.
